Here we have my beloved 1998 Mazda MX-5 NB8A
This car is was a regular sight at almost all club track days for the past 5 years.
Then in February 2017 at Eastern creek south circuit, I neglected to check the oil before setting out for the first run of the day. (as long as iv owned the car its always consumed oil and had to be topped up regularly)
On the third lap, the car started to lack power so I cut the engine and was towed in, the engine was "cooked" with almost exactly 200,000km on the clock.
Afew months passed, I sourced a replacement second-hand engine from Formaz (ford and mazda wreckers) and installed it with some mates in the backyard. The replacement engine set me back $1700 and all the gaskets and consumables that went along with it cost roughly another $400.
I procrastinated for months between buying the engine and installing it and during that time the warranty from the wreckers had expired.
Once the engine was installed it was very clear that it's not a good unit. Blowing not a lot of smoke but way too much to be deemed acceptable and healthy.
Despite 3 different attempts at fitting the oil sump it still leaks oil and I'm certain the engine also consumes oil.
Thrust bearing is noisy
As of late, the car has started to have "electrical problems" my mechanic is adamant that its an immobiliser problem. Bought a new battery for the car this week and has made no difference to the "immobiliser problem". As a result of this problem im unable to start the car.
ECU was water damaged and rusted out due to there being a small drip on the passenger's window side. The water would drip onto the carpet and wick up the underlay and make the computer damp. overtime it rusted out and was replaced with another factory standard unit by an auto electrician 2 years ago.
The car now required two different keys for day to day use, 1 key to start the car and the other key to operate all the locks.
(this is because when the ECU is changed the ignition also needs to be changed, hence the second key)
Long story short the car runs and goes (minus the electrical issue) but has problems.
Something else worth mentioning is that the air conditioner's cold function has never worked during my time owning the car however the hot function works incredibly well.
On a positive note, in the last two years the car has had:
Brand new soft top with glass window installed
Brand new set of Bridgestone RE003 tyres (1000km and 3 laps of south circit)
Brand new battery
6 Months Rego
Special features of the car include:
Browndavis roll bar
5 point Autotechnica harness
Sparco sprint racing seat
Mounted fire extinguisher
--SECOND SET OF FACTORY WHEEL'S WRAPPED WITH YOKOHAMA A050 SEMI SLICKS with %50 tread--
Haynes service manual
Receipts for all work and parts all yours to keep.
The car's bodywork is near perfect having being worked over by a quality body shop. The only damage being someone put a small dent in the right rear panel having opened their door on the car.
Also, minor damage to the front bumper's lip obtained whenthe NRMA was negligent whilst towing the car to a workshop.
This car has a lot of potential and is one of the best looking NB's around. If you are someone who loves to tinker or is looking for a base to build a race car, then this car is perfect for you.
