Help celebrate the 20th Anniversary of MX-5 Club motorsport

07 May 2017 / Ian Combes

On 20 January this year, the MX-5 Club of NSW passed a significant milestone - 20 years of track days at Wakefield Park.

After a couple of false-starts, plans are now underway to celebrate this milestone in style at the MX-5 Club track day on 26 November. It was important to celebrate this milestone at Wakefield Park, so there were a limited number of club track days to choose from. For various reasons, the chosen date is 26 November. Any later and it would be the 21st anniversary!

The club is fortunate to have a number of current members who were at that very first track day at Wakefield Park. and of course a special invitation has been extended to each of these members. As can be appreciated by a recent article in Club Torque (see page 14 of the Summer 2017 edition), there are many facinating stories from these early track days!

These days, the club is fortunate to be able to engage professional services for fire and rescue, ambulance and timing, but it certainly wasn't so flash in the early days. Fire and rescue was strictly DIY - something that didn't change too long ago. Timing was strictly manual with stopwatches - no computer in sight.

One thing that hasn't changed is the difficulty in find volunteers!

Whilst the focus is rightly on celebrating the 20th anniversary, many on-track activities are being planned to inform and entertain club members, so lock in that date. Watch out for information on the website, in Club Touque and weekly newsletter about the program for the day. Even if you only have a passing interest in motorsport, you should have a great day.

On the Saturday night before the track day, the club will host a special dinner in Goulburn to formally celebrate the 20th anniversary. Again stay tuned for details, but it should be a great night.

It is anticipated that club chapters will organise runs which converge at Wakefield Park on the Sunday, so again watch the website or talk to your chapter convenor.
