2014 MX-5 Cup Wrap-Up

It's early March 2014, a Saturday, and its pouring with rain. 16 race engines scream at each other waiting for a pair of red lights to blink out. A few long seconds later, they do.
163 competitive laps
21 races
24 championship entrants
25 round trophies
4 championship winners
and dozens of Audio Technica headphone prizes later …
… we’ve come to the end of the first year of the MX-5 Cup.
It's been an amazing first year for the Cup. It began as a twinkle in the eye of a few MX-5 racers that were sick of filling the back end of someone else grid and has grown to be a thriving category in its own right. Grids of 12-16 cars have filled every meet and the prospects look even better for next year. The racing has been hard, but above all fair. Respect has been shown up and down the grid, each of us knowing that good clean racing is not only possible but the priority.
With the support of the MX-5 Club of NSW, the potential for involving many, many more talented and enthusiastic MX-5 drivers, going forward, is huge.
The long and the short of it was that after a faultless season of leading the way, quite rightly Daniel Deckers took home the 2014 MX-5 Cup after a disciplined and consistent season. David Stone took home second place with metronome like precision to his driving (and a great, generous spirit of sharing his vast experience with new competitors). Third was shared equally between Steve Green and Andy Harris, both from the hotly contested Class ‘C’, a testament to the class structure that rewards consistent high performance irrespective of outright car speed.
A huge thank you to all the competitors who made it to the rounds of this years Cup. A race series is nothing without its competitors and the support and enthusiasm from everyone this year has been fantastic to see.
A massive thank you to our sponsors. Deckspeed Racing for their prize of a sponsored drive at each of the rounds this year (an incredible opportunity for the winners). Audio Technica for their support with audio equipment prizes for all classes for each round this year and Hydrawash for their sponsorship of the trophies for this years finale.
Entries for the 2015 MX-5 Cup open in a couple of weeks. The Cup promises to be bigger and better in 2015 with a dedicated website being launched, platforms for all of our race videos to live and areas for us to live and breathe all things related to the Cup. The weeks in between the Cup rounds next year should have a good place for talking about the last round and building up to the next.
Have a fantastic Christmas everyone, I hope Santa brings you a few more horsepower and we look forward to seeing you ready to race in 2015.
