What do 22 MX-5 enthusiasts and lawn bowls have in common? Well very little as it turns out!!!

The day was fine but very windy and that caused some problems as we were about to find out.

Our instructor Brett from the Figgy Bowlo was very welcoming and gave us the teams (to our horror he had paired up couples – we thought that might be a bad idea) and some instructions on how to bowl into and with the wind. How much weight to give and how much green to take – bring back changing brake pads we thought as it sounded simpler.

Well away we went for a pair’s tournament over 18 ends. Now this was not the time to invoke the 1 drink per end rule.

The styles ranged from thumpers (dropped from a height), wrong un’s (wrong bias’s) googlies (Mark S) and the occasional great bowl that ended up jack high. Many however just found their way to the ditch.

After many laughs we finished our bowls with a ‘spider’ where everyone bowls at the same time. Many prizes were awarded.

Then it was time to present the Illawarra Chapter’s Member of the Year to Mark Underwood and New Member of the Year to Phil Reid – well deserved both!

We finished with finger food from the bistro and a fun afternoon was had by all.
