Round 4 of the NSW Supersprint Championship was held at Sydney Motorsport Park Amaroo (South) Circuit and hosted by NSW Road Racing Club on Saturday 10/08/2019, a beautiful but windy winter’s day.

We usually see a whole group of MX5’s on the starting grid which did not occur this weekend again. There was a oversubscribed full  field of 88 cars entered in 6 run groups which equated to six timed seven  minute sessions and plenty of track time.

The whole of run group 6 was dedicated to Women in Motorsport with 15 cars entered.

After lunch with 4 sessions completed a lot of cars started to drop out and run groups were combined. This resulted in Run Group 1 only having 1 car on the grid. Because group 1 cars cannot be combined with any other groups, Luke Kovacic had the whole track and session to himself and managed to set a Class record for Class 6B in a blistering time of 61.13 secs. Unfortunately for Luke, this Class record was short lived due to the time attack EVO setting a record time of 58.98 secs.

We also had the pleasure of an ex F3 car known as a Dallara competing in Group 1. The Dallara has a nineties F1 Judd 3.9lt V8 engine producing 650hp and a weight of 450kgs. The F3 Dallara driver Dean Tighe managed to set an Impressive all time Track record time of 52.13 secs.

Thank you to all of our 7 MX5 Club drivers who represented our club gallantly against a barrage of ARDC drivers.  Congratulations goes to Luke Kovacic on having the fastest  MX5 on the day. Congratulations also goes to Jamie Martin on his 1st Place in Class 2A.

Congratulations to all of our 7 drivers on their results as follows.

Driver Place Class Time
Jamie Martin 1 2A 1:07.03
Malcolm Steel 2 2B 1:04.52
Ken Hardy 4 2B 1:06.65
Mark Kavanagh 5 2B 1:06.69
Luke Kovacic 2 6B 1:01.13
Ralph Thompson 3 6B 1:02.81
Russ Maxwell 4 6B 1:03.40

As far as the Club Championship is concerned, the Mazda MX-5 Car Club of NSW with only 7 competitors has dropped a bundle of points again today, but has courageously managed to leap frog MWS Car Club to 3rd place in the Championship, so the pointscore after the fourth round has ARDC in 1st place on 1819pts,  2nd place HSV Club on 848pts,  3rd place MX5 Club of NSW on 631pts.

The next Supersprint round is at Wakefield Park on  Sunday 22nd September 2019 to be hosted by the MX5 Club of NSW. This circuit is MX5 friendly so, with a lot of MX5 entries we would have a chance of jumping into 2nd place for the championship. Lets show them how it is done.
