The Brass Monkey is not a cannonball run!

Nobody is expected or asked to drive above their comfort levels

BREAKFAST VENUE

OUR BREAKFAST VENUE HAS BEEN CHANGED TO THE PARAGON CAFE, 174 AUBURN STREET (main street) GOULBURN as we could not guarantee this year the 90 minimum numbers required by the Goulburn Soldiers Club.  The Paragon Cafe Goulburn is the largest country cafe in Australia that  has recently undergone a total refit.

As we are having breakfast in a cafe with a menu and Sunday surcharge, Everyone who has registered will be given a $25.00 breakfast voucher (allowing for the usual $5 donation to Careflight) and order what they like off the Breakfast Menu.

The ETA for cars driving down the highway starting from Eastern Creek remains between 8:00am and 8:15am. Breakfast will be served between 8:15am and 9:30am.

WHAT IS THE BRASS MONKEY EVENT ALL ABOUT?

The Brass Monkey is an annual open invitation event started in 1992 by the Austin Healey Owners Club for breakfast now organised by the MX-5 Club of NSW and is the premier roadster run out of Sydney. The event has attracted up to 250 participants who possess a sense of adventure and good humour to bring to a charity breakfast. The Brass Monkey should be on all enthusiasts’ annual bucket list if you love a great drive on a cold crisp frosty morning in the middle of winter at your chosen pace through the countryside to start your day.  It is not a cannonball run on public roads.

WHY GET OUT OF BED FOR A DAWN BUSTER RUN?

If you have never been part of the Brass Monkey Events then don’t be discouraged by a dawn buster run over across the Southern Highlands to Goulburn because you think it is too early, dark and cold. The Brass Monkey has attracted thousands of motoring enthusiasts over the past 30 years being an experience like no other, and well worth getting out of bed at sparrow’s fart to enjoy the best run on our Club’s event’s calendar. Appropriately dressed with your top down (or windows down in a tin top) and heater on, you will participate in a memorable fun run to raise some money for a worthy cause with likeminded drivers, family and friends.

WHAT IS THE ROUTE?

Get to Goulburn whichever way you choose for the Brass Monkey Breakfast. This year we have four starting points. The main chase after the Brass Monkey starts under the stars at 6.00am down the M4 and waits for nobody, but you can make you own way on a route of your choosing. The MX-5 Club of NSW will chase the Brass Monkey along the M4 and M31 all the way to the Goulburn Solders Club. There will also be organised Club runs after breakfast from no later than 10.00am to see you home for lunch. How you choose to get home is up to you with some information about a long and short run set out below or on your Chapter’s post.

BRASS MONKEY RETURN RUNS

After breakfast, join one of the return runs back to Sydney or Canberra. You have the option of a Chapter Run or the Brass Monkey Short Return Run or Long Return Run.

Short Return Run will head off from the Goulburn Soldiers Club and travel down the Highlands Way to Mittagong. From Mittagong you make your own way home or stay and spend the day enjoying the delights and attractions of the Southern Highlands. Your GPS waypoints are Tallong, Moss Vale and Mittagong. This Grading of the Short Run “C” offering great scenery, winding roads with rolling hills.

Long Return Run is for enthusiasts and will head off from Goulburn and head down some fantastic MX-5 roads to Nowra along Windellama and Oallen Falls Roads to the Nerriga Pub for a refreshment stop. The last section down to the coast is along the recently sealed and exhilarating section of the Braidwood Road. Your waypoints for the run to the coast are Windellama, Nerriga and Nowra.

This is one of the most enjoyable runs within 200km of Sydney in a MX-5 being a challenging Waypoint Run of 126km to Nowra. The run offers everything from tight turns to long open straights and sweeping curves over an undulating landscape through forests and farmlands. Though short in length, the run to the coast is on some challenging and technical sections of road and given a Club Grading of “XH”.  The run from Nowra to Sydney is leisurely drive up the A1 for another 163km.
