Historic and Classic Vehicle Registration Guidelines

Overview

The Conditional Registration Scheme allows members of car clubs that are recognised by Transport for NSW (TfNSW) to make limited use of their Historic and Classic vehicles on the road network. Any Historic and Classic Registration Scheme guidelines set out in these web pages apply to the NSW Historic and Classic Registration Scheme only. Therefore, these guidelines will only apply to members who have a vehicle that is garaged at a NSW address.

The MX-5 was first released in October 1989 and at 30 years they became eligible for the Conditional Registration Scheme which encompasses both Historic and Classic vehicles.

Detailed information and forms for each category can be found here.

Calculating the vehicles manufacture date

Your vehicle must be at least 30 years of age or older from the year it was manufactured. Generally in Australia the Compliance plate date is used for registration purposes. However if the build date of the vehicle precedes the compliance date it may be used for historic registration purposes.

Historic and Classic Registration Scheme Guidelines for the Mazda MX-5 Club of NSW

In order for the Club to approve an application for the Historic or Classic Registration Scheme, the following guidelines will need to be followed:

  1. Unless otherwise stated, the Historic or Classic Registration Scheme Administrator will be the Scheme Administrator and Responsible Person for TfNSW.
  2. The Club will only support Historic or Classic Registration applications for Mazda MX-5 / Eunos Roadster / Mazda Miata vehicles.
  3. A Financial Member of the Club can apply to have a vehicle approved for either a Historic or Classic Registration by following the requirements in the relevant guidelines.
  4. Applicants for a Historic or Classic Registration Scheme must be a Financial Member of the Mazda MX-5 Club of NSW before the Club will approve an application. The Member must be the owner of the vehicle.
  5. A Financial Member can apply for multiple permits if they own multiple MX-5s that meet the criteria.
  6. If your membership is not Financial at any time, the vehicle/s is no longer a part of the Historic or Classic Registration Scheme and the Club will be required to notify TfNSW that you are no longer a Member of the Club.
  7. Vehicles submitted for a Historic or Classic Registration must be at least 30 years old, well presented and reflect that the owner is an enthusiast. This is a little subjective and will vary from car to car, but generally speaking cars should be one colour and body/paint be of a good standard with minimal rust, the interior and engine bay should be neat and tidy, and the car must be mechanically sound.
  8. Any modifications you make to the vehicle after it has been accepted into the Historic or Classic Registration Scheme will need to be cleared with the Scheme Administrator, to ensure the Club remains comfortable with how the vehicle is presented. A Conditional Registration such as the Historic or Classic registration is not an avenue to bypass engineering approval for a vehicle and getting it on the road.
  9. Please note that the Historic and Classic Registration inspection process takes time so please allow sufficient time before registration is due.
  10. The Member will be responsible for submitting their own Historic or Classic Registration application to Transport for NSW.
  11. Once a Historic or Classic Registration Scheme has been issued by TfNSW, you will be required to advise the Club’s Scheme Administrator of the new registration number and log book reference number. You must also update your vehicle registration details in the Member Portal.
  12. It is your responsibility to comply with all the rules, regulations and requirements set down by the Club and by TfNSW whilst using the vehicle.
  13. The Club provides this scheme in support of the objectives of the Club as set out in the Club's By Laws.
  14. There is no limit on the number of MX-5s that a Member may include on this scheme, but a separate Historic or Classic Registration is required for each vehicle.
  15. Should a dispute arise over a Conditional Registration Scheme application, the Club rules relating to disputes and mediation will apply.
  16. A member attending a run must notify the run leader of their intentions of attending the run and at the start of the run must sign the registration form and highlight that their vehicle is registered under the Historic or Classic Registration Scheme. This data will be given to the Scheme Administrator for record keeping.
  17. Any trips outside the club’s event program must meet the log book guidelines.
