Braidwood and Bungendore
Perched high in the Southern Tablelands and famous for its prized rare truffles, Braidwood is one of the prettiest towns in the state. It’s the halfway point between Canberra and the NSW South Coast, so you’ll often find its streets brimming with travellers stopping for a lunch break or to browse the antique stores.
Tucked into a picturesque valley in southwest NSW, the historic village of Bungendore is a charming rural escape. Not far from the national capital, Canberra, here you’ll find lovingly preserved colonial buildings and artistic craftsmanship along with abundant farmer's markets and renowned cool-climate wineries.
We will gather at Milton for a caffeine heartstarter around 9.00am. From there the obvious route is straight down the Highway to Batemans Bay (around 45 minutes from the Milton Bakery), then a right turn on to the KIngs Highway and up Clyde Mountain for a morning tea at Braidwood (about 50 minutes). Then on to Bungendore for lunch (around 45 minutes), so around 3 hours allowing time for morning tea. There are alternative routes home for the more adventurous, that would be relevant for anyone from the Nowra region. These, however, may involve some dirt - good, well-graded roads but still not sealed in stretches. I am researching these and will let you know.
For morning tea, I'm proposing Provisions Deli and Creperie in Braidwood, and for lunch I suggest the Cafe Woodworks - we have been there several years ago, it was very good then and I believe it still is.
