Running of the Sheep Long Weekend
This event is fully booked, if places become available we will post the news on MX-5 Illawarra Facebook page.
Join us as we head off on our adventure to find the frisky sheep that like to
run wild down the main street of the Irish settlement of Boorawa.
Last year the sheep were in quarantine and self isolation but this year it
looks like they’ll be let loose to entertain us again, starting at high noon.
After our departure from Haywards Bay, our 1st stop of the day will be in
Goulburn for morning tea at the Paragon Cafe.
After leaving Goulburn, Mark has some great back roads for you to enjoy
before we arrive at Murrumburrah-Harden for lunch at the Terracotta Cafe.
We will allow time to look around the town, view the wonderful murals and
see the lifesize bronze statue of the famous WW1 WarHorse, Bill theBastard.
We’ve organised for the sculptor, Carl Valerius to give us a talk on his
fabulous work of art and the history behind it. Cost is only $5 pp and you’ll
get a booklet to keep.
Our last stop will be the Lambing Flat Chinese Tribute Garden, just 5
minutes from Young.
The Boorowa Irish Woolfest (aka The Running of the Sheep) is held each year and COVID means that the planning committee are still in the process of finalising the events in keeping with government guidelines.
However, as in the past, events may include:
Running of the Sheep
The Shearing Shack
Blessing of the Fleece
The Street Parade
Growers and Boutique Markets
St John’s Art Show
This will be a full day and you will be left to enjoy the day as you wish. A
number of venues will be open for lunch as well as food stalls if you just
want something light.

Dinner on Saturday night will be at the Bowling Club where we’ll enjoy their
excellent Asian cuisine (very small western menu available, schnitzel and
chips, fish and chips, steak and chips).
Young Services Club will be the venue for dinner on Sunday night.
Our return trip home will be on Monday, which is the Labour Day public
holiday. Two options will be offered with the main one being a trip to the
Junee Liquorice Factory which is a great destination with an amazing
selection of delicious liquorice and chocolate. They also have a wonderful
homewares store upstairs, a museum of old world cars (entry gold coin
donation), and displays of chocolate making. Morning tea and lunch
available. Entry to the factory is free.
From the factory, the drive time is approx 4 hours back to Haywards Bay.
Or if you want to just head home after breakfast, that is your 2nd option.
