It is that time of the year when the BreakFast Club announces the dates for its annual run around the Alpes and Victorian High Country for members who love to drive their MX-5s on great roads in the company of likeminded enthusiasts.  In 2017 we are driving down to base the event at the Allamar Motor Inn at the foot of Tawonga Gap (http://www.allamarmotorinn.com.au ).  Due to the number of bounty hunters hidden in the bush and road safety patrols on the Black Spur with its 80km speed limit we have abandoned a special run down to Narbethong on Day 1 this year.

This event is a waypoint run that has technical sections of road interspersd with transitional runs each day and is therefore graded XH for experienced drivers who love a good drive in their five.  As a waypoint run nobody is expeced to drive above their comfort level.  If you are in unfamiliar with this type of event and/or have not accompanied us on a BreakFast Club run then you must give me a call before booking your accommodation.

 OVERVIEW

DAY 1:  We meet at Pheasants Nest to depart at 7.00am to head down the M31/Hume Highway.  We leave the highway for a drive on backrods for Tumut to refuel for a run through the wonderful Greenhills State Forest for Tumbarumba then across country to Jingellic to cross the Murray River into Victoria.  We drive the twists and turns up and over the ridgelines past Granya to move from the Murray Valley Road to the Murray Valley Highway before turning off to the Kiewa Valley and the Allamar Motel.

DAY 2 & 3:  Day 2 and Day 3 are interchangeable depending on the weather.  These two days are fabulous driving days over some truly great MX-5 roads and the reason the BreakFast Club return to northeast Victoria year after year.

Weather permitting, Day 2 starts with a passage over Tawonga Gap for a run up the 400 twists and turns uo to and over Mt Hotham for Omeo.  From Omeo we then head off to drive the best 100km of sealed road for motoring enthusiasts in Australia, the Omeo Highway, that starts with the awesome washing machine through Angler’s Rest followed by the magnificent black snake of new bitumen that weaves its way up, down and around the Mitta River  valley flanked by mountains between Bonang High Plains Road and the village of Mitta Mitta for refreshments and possibly to overcome a touch of nausea.   We head back to Tawonga retracing our route back to the Bonang Plains Road to head up to Falls Creek and take the long sweeping decent to Mount Beauty for home to end the best one day drive you will ever have in a MX-5.

Day 3 is an out and back run down to Mansfield that includes a run each way along the King Valley, across the mountains and through the forests between Whitfield and Tolmie with a visit to Beechworth and Bright on the way home,  If all goes well the day could include an early run of Peter Battissons newly found twisty Lake Road north of Tallagatta. Peter ratesthis road as a 5 star run.

If the weather on Mount Hotham is unfavourable on Day 2 the run to Mansfield will happen on that day with the ascent of Mount Hotham and running of the Omeo Highway taking place on Day 3.

Day 4 is the run home.  Whether you go home over the Snowy Mountains or some other route will be decided at dinner on Day 3.

Accommodation

Friday 28 and Sunday 30 April 2017 – We are basing ourselves each night at the Allamar Motor Inn on the hill overlooking the picturesque Kiewa Valley nestled under Tawonga Gap.  I have reserved all 10 rooms under my name and the MX-5 Club of NSW which I anticipate filling giving us exclusive access to their bar with use of their billiard table and chesterfield chairs around the open fire in the lounge area.  Allamar Motor Inn only accommodates 11 singles or 15 people at a pinch with an overflow room in the owner’s residence or rooms down the road a couple of kilometres at the Snowgum or Bogong Moth Motel.  We have the run of kitchen for dinner to find our master chef or can order in takeaway or eat out.  We take breakfast on the road each day after an early start.

Allamar Motor Inn has the following accommodation all at $120 per room per night:

5 rooms with a double bed only (ie single room unless you are into spooning)

3 x twin rooms at with double bed and single bed

2 x Queen deluxe for 1 or 2 (single double size bed)

1 x King de luxe for 1 or 2 (single king size bed)

1 x family room for 1 to 3 (double bed with double bunk)
