A Bunch Of Wineos
22 October 2023 / Report by: Brigid McCarthy Photos by: Maree Eccleston, Sandra Wakeham and Brigid McCarthy
An early fog burnt off, as I made my way across town, to our McDonalds Mt. Colah meeting point. Experience told me, we’d have a beautiful, clear, blue skied day, once the fog cleared. Maree and Steve, as our run organisers and leaders, had arrived early, to welcome us all. Glenn arrived with his son James, whilst Eilis enjoyed time with their new grandchild. Marcus, a BreakFast Club regular, and his partner Catherine, were won with “Wineo” being in the run name (weren’t we all!). It's always lovely to catch up with Sandra and Graham. John and Jeanette’s red NC, was looking perfect, as always. Andy and Mango were definitely ‘odd men out’, in a sea of red and silver.
Our convoy headed up the Old Pacific Highway, with surprisingly few cyclists and motorbikes. At Calga, we turned onto Peats Ridge Road, winding our way through Peats Ridge, Central Mangrove, Kulnura and Bucketty. Our comfort stop at Wollombi, offered a welcome stretch of legs, ahead of our final stretch on Paynes Crossing Road, through Broke and onto Pokolbin.
The choice of roads was perfect for our MX-5’s, and the flowering silky oaks along the roadside, made for a pretty and scenic trip.
Turning into Harrigan’s Pub at Pokolbin, we were greeted with plentiful parking (another great photo opportunity!) and our reserved tables, in a well shaded, open air area. It had been a warm run, so a few beers and ciders were ordered, but there were a few glasses of chilled local wine enjoyed too!
A great group, a great day and beautiful weather. Thanks Steve and Maree for leading us on this lovely adventure.
