A group of excited travellers met at Hungry Jack’s in Bomaderry ready for today’s mystery letter run. There were plenty of guesses about where we were going, particularly after the timing for morning tea was given, but none of them were correct. The convoy needed to leave by 9:00am, but where was Kerry? His car had been parked at a petrol pump for ages and, frustratingly for Kerry, the queue to pay was very slow moving. We were all happy to stand around and chat while waiting. He made it with a few seconds to spare. Everyone guessed we would head north…. not hard to get that right, as it’s the only direction you can go from this location. However, using the new overpass we crossed over the highway and headed through the back streets of Bomaderry and turned on to Bolong Road. As Kerry had just driven this road to the run starting point he queried if we were driving back to his place as punishment; however, we turned off long before his address onto Backforest Rd and then continued on to Berry.. driving past Linda and Bob’s new home. Rose suggested we call in for a cuppa and Linda wanted to overtake to get the kettle on… next time! A few were disappointed we didn’t stop at the Treat Factory. Next it was up Berry Mtn, avoiding a few potholes and lyrebirds, through Bellawongarah up Barrengarry Mtn before finally arriving for morning tea at the Buzz Cafe in Robertson. The drive so far was superb. Clear skies, windy roads and very little traffic, despite a couple of stops at roadworks. Although booked, the Buzz Cafe was not really prepared for our arrival. Goodies to go with coffee were limited, and unfortunately for Tony, Geoff got the last portuguese tart. What we consumed was good quality, but with only one staff member, it was slow going. The shops around the Cafe were interesting to browse through and three of us made christmas purchases.
Appetites fully fuelled and retail therapy satisfied, it was time to drive on. The best roads were behind us and we did encounter heavy traffic in places, but it was still a great drive through Burrawang (the pub is being totally renovated), East Bowral, Berrima Rd, New Berrima and finally Berrima for lunch. The houses and estates in some of these areas are worth seeing as are some of the hedges. The Surveyor General Inn 1834 bistro meals were high quality..well worth the visit. Tony and Jennifer left for home after lunch and the remainder of us had a leisurely stroll through the shops in the main street.
It was a bloomin' great day out. Thanks to everyone for a great day out. I'm sure you can guess what the mystery letter was for today's run.
