Concours d'Elegance 2022

01 October 2022 / Words by Bryan Shedden

Concours d'Elegance made a return to the President's Picnic in 2022, coordinated by Joe Kovacic and Bryan Shedden. Despite extensive promotion in the lead-up, only 10 MX-5s were set for judging in front of the historic Ebenezer Church, which reduced the workload for the judges but raises questions about the future viability of this event.

As per recent versions of our Concours d'Elegance, modified MX-5s were welcomed with no penalty for non-originality. Instead, all MX-5s were judged solely in terms of how well they were presented in six categories.

  • Exterior Panels and Paint
  • Exterior Top
  • Interior
  • Boot and Spare Wheel
  • Engine Bay
  • Underside and Wheels/Tyres

Three teams of three judges were selected from the Concours entrants and they set to work for the next hour or two, scrutinising each car in minute detail. This year a new online Google Form was used to capture all the scores, although the scores were also recorded on paper forms as insurance. This new system substantially streamlined the data entry process and boosted the integrity of the calculations.

Once the judges finished, I collected all the judging sheets and retired to the hall with laptop in hand to cross-check all the scores and compile the results. Seeing how close the results were, with only one point separating 1st and 2nd in one class, I double- and triple-checked the scores to make sure all was above board.

The winners were:

  • NA Class - Louis Serret (290)
  • NB Class - John Molden (289)
  • NC Class - Frances Molden (291)
  • Outright - Frances Molden
