Crooked Route to Crookwell

This run was originally going to be to Kangaroo Valley but the road works at Marulan looked like it would be very difficult to turn off to Bundanoon so it was changed to Crookwell. Little did we realise that there were also roadworks on our revised route through Goulburn. Ah well c’est la vie…..

It was a fine and sunny Sunday morning and 10 cars gathered in the Spotlight car park in Queanbeyan. There were 2 other cars joining us in Bungendore and Gunning. It was an 8:30 start and the road was quiet. Setting off through a dry-looking country side, the group made good time to Bungendore and straight on to Tarago. The conditions were perfect and all enjoyed the leisurely drive.

Still with very little traffic, we had a great run to Goulburn, with one section of gravel where the road was being resurfaced. Fortunately it was well-watered and did not result in too much dust. On arrival at the outskirts of Goulburn we struck an unexpected detour which took us into Goulburn over the railway and back to the road leading up to the overpass on the Hume, at the southern end of Goulburn. Here the group turned immediately left, heading south, and the traffic was still reasonably light. Passing the Federal Highway turn-off, we travelled another 10 klms and turned right onto the old Hume Highway through to Gunning. This was our morning coffee stop and there was a small market in progress.

Now refreshed, we gathered and headed back out of town to the top of the hill and turned left towards Crookwell. This was another road with light traffic and great scenery. There were great views of the wind turbines along this route and a nice winding road. With an hour before our lunch booking at the Criterion Pub, the group split up to browse the many shops and visit the sock factory where one member bought some bright red socks to match his MX5.

The pub had reserved 2 tables in the dining room and the food was both generous and delicious. As usual there was much chatter over lunch and once our lunch had settled, the group trickled away to make their way home.

Another perfect MX5 day out.
