Hunter Chapter Celebrates 20 Years of MX-5 Motoring

In October 2026, the Hunter Chapter of the MX-5 Club of NSW celebrated 20 years of friendship, motoring and a shared passion for the Mazda MX-5.

The idea of establishing a Hunter Chapter came from the NSW Club Committee in late 2006. With the distance to Sydney making regular participation difficult for local members, Sean Thompson was approached to help establish a chapter closer to home.

The inaugural gathering took place at Juicy Beans Café in Newcastle on 13 October 2006. Almost 30 people attended, some travelling from as far as Tamworth and Sydney. Following an introduction to the Club and its philosophy by then President George Benedek, the gathering enjoyed coffee, conversation and a drive to Kurri Kurri for lunch. Sean became the Chapter's first Convenor, with Tom Wilde taking over in 2007.

Since those early days, the Chapter has grown into a thriving community, bringing together MX-5 enthusiasts from throughout the Hunter region. Monthly meetings, social gatherings, scenic drives and club events have helped build lasting friendships and countless happy motoring memories.

The Chapter celebrated its 10th anniversary in October 2016 at Nanna Kerr's Kitchen in Pokolbin, attracting around 50 MX-5s and members from Sydney, the Mid North Coast and Canberra.

A major milestone followed in May 2026 when the Hunter Chapter organised and hosted the 16th National MX-5 Meet (NatMeet) at Pokolbin. This substantial event attracted 182 participants who enjoyed social activities and driving experiences throughout the region.

The 20th anniversary celebrations took place on 10 October 2026 at Nelson Bay Golf Club. Twenty-seven MX-5s gathered at Raymond Terrace for a scenic drive to the venue, with a stop at Grahamstown Dam for a group photograph. Despite some early rain, the weather eventually cooperated and the journey continued with roofs down!

Fifty-six members gathered for the anniversary lunch, which included the presentation of special 20th anniversary badges featuring the distinctive Hunter landmark, Nobbys Headland. A photographic slideshow, stories from the Chapter's early days, entertaining member recollections and the cutting of the anniversary cake made for a memorable afternoon.

The celebration also recognised the many people who have contributed to the Chapter's success over two decades, particularly its past and present Convenors and long-standing members. Their enthusiasm, commitment and willingness to volunteer have helped make the Hunter Chapter what it is today.

From a small gathering of enthusiasts in 2006 to a vibrant club community hosting national events in 2026, the Hunter Chapter's story is ultimately about much more than the cars we drive. It is about friendship, shared experiences, great roads and the enjoyment of being part of the MX-5 family.

Here's to the first 20 years — and many more happy kilometres ahead!

Our thanks to Annette Roberts, Helen Mayo and all the helpers who made the anniversary celebration such a success.
