Hunter’s Yearly Run to Gundy
Hoping for a sunny winter’s day, eight cars carrying 14 members set off from Cameron Park Centre for our winter run to Gundy. The wind chill was a little brisk, but that has never stopped us before!
Heading up James Booth Drive, we were surrounded by the sounds of bellbirds singing and kookaburras laughing. Winter wattle, with its bright yellow blooms, lined the roadsides, adding a splash of colour to the winter landscape.
Turning onto Richmond Vale Road, we passed a house on the right whose lawn is filled with animal statues, both big and small. On the left was one of the most beautiful homes and properties we have seen. We always wonder who the owner is!
The roads were winding and enjoyable, just the sort of roads our MX-5s love. Sandy Creek Road was her usual self, with bumps and potholes just to keep us on our toes. The one-lane bridge and some steep turns certainly kept our hearts pumping!
The next section of the drive took us along Wollombi Road. The scenery was lovely, and it was a great drive, with much of the road having now been repaired following the recent rains.
Morning tea was at Wollombi Park, where David showed off his portable coffee maker to everyone’s fascination. It smelled great and tasted even better!
With the sun now shining, we continued along Broke Road towards Mount Bulga and the open-cut mine, before turning onto Bureen Road and making our way to Denman Park for a comfort stop.
Here we met up with Linda — with an “I”, not a “Y”! — bringing us to nine cars and 15 members. It was great to have her join us for the remainder of the run.
Heading out towards Muswellbrook, we entered the beautiful equine district, where impressive horse studs are surrounded by lush green paddocks and magnificent horses grazing peacefully in the winter sunshine.
Moving on to Segenhoe Road, our final destination was now not far away.
The Linga Longa Pub at Gundy is a lovely old-world hotel, offering great food and a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere in this charming little country town. The fish tacos were a definite hit, as was the Guinness beef cheek pie — both proving to be excellent choices after our morning of driving.
A big thank you to John and Chris for organising another great romp through the country. Wonderful roads, beautiful scenery, good food and, most importantly, great company — another fantastic day out with the MX-5 Club of NSW!
