Illawarra's Restorative Wind & Sock Run
12 August 2013 / Report by Ken Tuckey
It was a cold July morning for the 20 Illawarra club members as they headed off towards Crookwell. The forecast was for snow storms. On the way through they stopped to admire the wind farm but with snow on the ground they quickly retreated to the warmth of their cosy MX-5 cabins. Crookwell was a welcome relief, as everyone dived into cafés with inviting log fires. A quick hot cuppa and it was off to the Lindner Sock Factory where we met up with the Canberra Chapter, all neatly parked out front. After a demonstration of the incredibly complicated sock making machines there was a buying frenzy for the highly desirable socks.
We all then headed off to the Sydney Vintage Car Restoration Centre. The generous lunch was most welcome and we then headed out to the workshop. It was an Aladdin’s cave of wonders. The highlight was an incredible BRG Jaguar, built from scratch using a very rough sketch drawn by the owner (still on the wall). It was sort of a D type style powered by a V12 with a Porsche rear mounted drive system, valued at one million dollars. People were polarised, you either loved it or hated it. Either way it was a marvellous example of the awesome skills of the SVCR team. Scattered around the workshops were Cadillacs, old Holdens, Triumph TR3s, rare and very collectable cars of all types. The team then showed off their skills with demonstrations of panel beating using the English Wheel, punching louvres into panels, repairing panels with white metal etc. Thank you SVCRC for a most interesting and informative tour.
