Laggan Pub Lunch

The day began under a soft grey sky, the sort that promises rain but rarely commits. By 10am, the Little Sutton Bakehouse in Sutton, NSW was buzzing, coffee orders flowed, pastries disappeared and conversations ensued.
This run, a relaxed 100 kilometres to Laggan Pub, would take the convoy through Gundaroo, Gunning, Grabben Gullen and Crookwell, a classic country route of undulating roads, sweeping vistas, and just enough twist to keep drivers smiling.
After a quick briefing, the ‘starting gun’ sent 19 cars and 36 members heading out toward Gundaroo. Three cars left ahead early, leaving a great conga line of 16 vehicles to meander through the countryside. Every car in the pack was an MX 5… except one. [There was also a lovely Fiat Abarth 124 Spider – Ed.] A week-old performance blue Hyundai i20N joined the fray, sparking lighthearted debate about whether it could keep pace with the roadsters or even more make the distance. It did — effortlessly. [Special mention should also be made of Rob’s gorgeous new ND, specially tricked out with a ton of 35th anniversary gear. - Ed]
One of the highlights of the day was the turnout of first timers and new members. Cath and Phil Hunter, Adrian Sancataldo and Alexandra Kellar, and Tanya Parkin all joined the run. There’s something special about seeing newcomers experience the club’s camaraderie for the first time and hopefully many more.
The weather, which had threatened to dampen spirits, instead behaved beautifully. The roads were kind: good surface and barely an “alien” car encountered along the way, nor interruption to the conga line which maintained its shape throughout.
The Laggan Pub once again proved why it’s a favourite destination. Hosting 36 hungry drivers is no small feat, yet meals arrived relatively promptly and steaming. Shepherd’s pie was the runaway favourite, though lamb cutlets, T bones and pizzas made strong showings. The dining room buzzed (some might say raucously at times) with post drive chatter, scenic highlights, and the occasional good-natured ribbing about the Hyundai’s performance. [I have to add the Guinness & Beef pot pie to the special mentions—it was de lish us!- Ed]
Short, easy, and thoroughly enjoyable — this was one of those outings that captures the spirit of the club perfectly. A big thank you to all participants for making the run such an enjoyable day. Your company, good humour, and support are what make these outings worthwhile.
There's more on our Facebook page, of course, including Rob's excellent ReLive video of the run (photos included). Check it out!
