Lunch at the Sir George Hotel, Jugiong

All nine MX 5s, and the fifteen drivers and passengers inside them, somehow managed to converge on the Boorowa Bakery for the first pit stop, despite setting off from two different starting points (not exactly in the plan) 25 kilometres apart. Whether it was a navigational misunderstanding or an enthusiastic interpretation of the plan depends on who you ask. Either way, this was a minor blip and was not going to detract from neither the day nor the truly gorgeous autumn weather. As it turned out the timing was spot on as all 15 participants rolled into Boorowa within minutes of each other, ready for a much needed “nutritional service, maintenance and the obligatory oil change.”
The Boorowa Bakery handled the unexpected influx with ease. Their now famous apple turnover with cream proved a highlight as was their Byron Bay organic coffee the latter attracting a comment I overheard that it “tasted a little hashish…..”. Once everyone was fuelled up, the group set off as one at last along Cunningar Road toward Harden. The road was in excellent condition — smooth, flowing, and dotted with the kind of bends that make an MX 5 feel right at home.
The stretch from Harden to Jugiong was equally enjoyable. Several members who hadn’t driven it before were quick to comment on how good it was: rolling hills, long sweeping views, and countryside shaped by generations of high quality wool production, mixed farming, and renowned Merino studs. It’s the sort of landscape that makes both the drive and the destination worthwhile, reminding you just why you garage an MX-5.
On arrival at the Sir George Hotel in Jugiong, the group was guided to outdoor seating beneath a canopy of deciduous trees showing off their seasonal colours. The staff made sure everyone was well looked after, rounding out a day of great roads, great company, and warm regional hospitality.
After a very pleasant a la carte luncheon everyone found their own way back home, primarily down the Hume/Barton Highways. My odometer read a round-trip distance of 335 kilometres from Tuggeranong and back – a relatively easy and relaxing run but far enough to get rid of the cobwebs.
Many thanks to all participants for making the day a success.
