Lunch Run to Kiama, Jamberoo and Robertson.
Saturday 29 July
The weather was perfect for today’s run. It felt more like spring rather than mid-winter. Fifteen members and eight cars had an early start, meeting at Earnest Arthur’s in Nowra for coffee number one. After catching up with members we only see on weekend runs (some of us are young enough to still work) and two Canberra members, we set off on today’s driving journey. After crossing the Nowra Bridge, Kerry Warner led the group through Back Forest and Far Meadow. Most of us had never driven these roads before, actually, we didn’t know they existed. The roads were narrow and windy, but despite a couple of potholes, were mostly in good condition. The weekend cyclists were more dangerous!! This is a route we will definitely explore again on a future run.
The drive continued up Berry Mountain and through Kangaroo Valley where a very courteous caravan driver pulled off the road to let the MX5 convoy pass. He got the ‘thumbs up’ from everyone. Morning tea at Moonacre’s Kitchen in Robertson saw everyone fill their tanks with some very yummy cakes and pastries.
We were all looking forward to the next section of the trip down Jamberoo Mountain which only reopened last week after landslides caused by the torrential rain last year. Despite speed restrictions being in place, as they are still completing stabilising works in some sections, it was exciting to be back on this road.
Saddleback Mountain was our next challenge. It’s easy to find dead ends on this road and Kerry led a few unsuspecting followers down a couple of these roads. They got to enjoy some beautiful scenery while the rest of us waited for their return. After a successful navigation over the mountain, we continued through Kiama and Gerringong to arrive at our final destination at Shoalhaven Heads Pub for lunch.
Today’s run was a great MX5 run. Almost the entire journey was on scenic, back country roads, and despite being a weekend, there was very little traffic. Thanks, Kerry, for organising this run for our Club members.
