MX-5 Cup Season Wrap-up

The field for round 6 at the SMP GP circuit, the final for the season, was down to 17 drivers from a record 27 in round 4 and 5.
Class times were:
- Open Forced Induction 1:48 Minus
- Open Naturally Aspirated 1:48 Minus
- A 1:48.01 to 1:51
- B 1:51.01 to 1:54
- C 1:54.01 and over
Star of the day was Todd Herring driving Verne Johnson’s 1840 turbo NB with 3 wins outright and in the Open F/I class.
Second on the day was Zac Raddatz driving the ex Steve Green 1840 naturally aspirated NB with 3 wins in the Open N/A class.
Third on the day was John Fraser with 3 wins in Class B.
Fastest MX-5 Cup lap of the day was recorded by Todd Herring with a 1:40.8219 and this was faster than the best lap of the day in the SuperTT Category.
Round 6 Results
Open Class – Forced Induction was won by Todd Herring with 3 wins. Again our ‘reigning’ champion from 2020 (there was no championship in 2021), Tim Herring came in second in class, this time with 3 second places behind Todd. Mat Fraser came 3rd in class with 2 thirds and a DNF..
Open Class – Naturally Aspirated was won by Zac Raddatz with three wins. Second was Ben Oldfield with three second places.
Class A was won by Sarah Medley with three wins and a 4th.. Second was Stuart McFadyen with two thirds and a win. Third was Scott Lanham with a fourth and two second places. Steven Head was 4th in Class A with a 5th and two 4th places. Jacob Giovenco came second in class in Race 1 but had a DNF in Race 2 followed by a 3rd in Race 3 resulting in 5th in class on the day. Andy Boydell had a 6th and two 5th places for11 points tota and 6th in class.
Class B was won by John Fraser with three class wins. Second was Craig Barney with three 2nd places. Third was Rob Herrick with two 4th places and a 3rd. Brad Smith was 3rd in class in races 1 and 2 then had a DNF in race 3 for a result of 4th in class..
Class C was won by John Connolly with three wins. Second was Paul Nudd with a second in Race 1 and no further starts due to overheated engine.
CHAMPIONSHIP WRAP-UP
2022 MX-5 Cup Champion is Todd Herring finishing with 107 points from his best five rounds. Congratulations Todd!
Equal on 103 points were Zac Raddatz and Craig Barney however Zac had class wins in two rounds and Craig had a class win in only one round so second in the championship goes to Zac with Third to Craig.
Ben Oldfield was on equal points with Craig after 6 rounds but after each dropped their worst result Craig finished on 103 points and Ben finished on 100 points for 4th place in the championship. 2020 Champion Tim Herring missed round 2 so that became his drop round and he finished on 94 points for 5th place in the 2022 Championship. Steven Head scored 88 points after drop for 6th place. Stuart McFadyen was only one point behind for 7th place. Jacob Giovenco scored 79 points for 8th place. Rob Herrick scored 69 points for 9th place. Robbie Giovenco and Andy Boydell were on equal 67 points after each dropped a zero round but Robbie had a ‘perfect score’ in round three so 10th place to Robbie and 11th place to Andy. John Connolly was only one point behind for 12th place. Jamie Martin was one point back in 13th and another point back to Ben Cathcart 14th. Richard Herring 58, 15th. Jaxon Fraser 57, 16th. Marty Voormeulen 54 17th. Sarah Medley 52 18th. Brad Smith 46 19th. Luke Jeffress 45 20th.
