Retford Park

1 May 2025

The morning greeted us with a continuance of the rainy weather but, undeterred, four cars congregated at the Riverbank Reserve at North Nowra. After greetings and a comfort stop we mounted our vehicles, covered up unfortunately, for the trip up Cambewarra Mountain and into Kangaroo Valley. After a welcome stop for coffee and a bun and some more convivial conversation, and another comfort stop, we were on the road again for our appointment with the tour guide.

Another climb, this time Barrengarry Mountain, in the rain and fog saw us arriving in Bowral. After a short drive up Old South Road to our destination, we parked our cars and checked in at the office. Here we were joined by old friends Mark and Kay from Sydney chapter. There was an opportunity to view the art works displayed before meandering out to the front of the residence and its marvellous gardens. Despite some drizzling rain the intrepid took time to inspect the gardens before we were called to start the tour.

Retford Park residence was built by the Hordern family but later owned by James Fairfax. His taste for artwork and fine antique furniture was on display and well worth the time to view.

After our tour we adjourned to the Ngunuggula Gallery to view their art collection which included a display of local school art student work, well worth the viewing. Then it was on to the café for lunch where we enjoyed a delightful light meal. Lunch finished we said our farewells for the trip home. Despite the weather, a lovely day with friends.
