Iceberg Run
The annual Iceberg Run is the brainchild of James Manion and started out as an informal run that morphed into the major dawn buster event for MX-5s under the auspices of our Club for all the right reasons.
The Iceberg Run in 2013 goes north up the Putty Road that mandates an XH grading for this waypoint run where you travel at your own pace in the company of likeminded drivers. Unless it is raining you are expected to greet the sunrise and drive the route rugged up to the eyeballs with your top down.
If you have never been on a dawn buster run before then here is your chance to participate or again experience the adventure that is a chilly early run on a winter’s morn and one of the best reasons to get out of bed to drive your MX-5 on a Sunday morning before the punters hit the road.
The Route
The run starts before sunrise heading over the Hawkesbury River at Windsor then up the Putty Road for 155km before winding its way through the awesome gorges just past Howes Valley to regroup on the other side of the gorges before turning right off the Putty Road for the sensational run across from Milbrodale to Broke for a quick right then left turn on passing the Broke General Store to the Broke Road for Pokolbin with an easy drive through the vineyards to brekkie at the Hunter Valley Gardens Village. A run of a little under 200km with two right turns and one left turn before swinging off Broke Road into HVG. A special raz for anyone who manages to gets lost on the Putty Road!
Convenience stops
The run is a waypoint event regrouping once in a roadside parking area the bushland with no toilet facilities just past the Gorges and before the start of the farms at Mildrodale. For those in need of a toilet break there is only the Putty Road Halfway House at Garland Valley at about an hour into the run and the Broke General Store at about 90 minutes from the start. The area through which the route travels otherwise bereft of toilet facilities. There is a third option that has been used in the past being an area of your choice in the bush beside the road.
Fuel
Fill up before you start from Maccas. There is no guarantee of getting fuel between the McGraths Hill and HVG. After breakfast the closest fuel is around Cessnock.
Return Run
A decision on the run or runs home via the Putty Road, Wisemans Ferry and/or Freemans Waterhole will be decided over breakfast.
