MX-5 CUP

The Mazda MX-5 Club of NSW inaugurated the MX-5 CUP championship in 2014, and the series has continued to grow over the years, generally with each season being more successful than that before.

The MX-5 CUP is generously sponsored by Blue Mountains Mazda.

The MX-5 CUP has been created to provide an annual competition featuring low-cost, competitive, good spirited MX-5 racing. It is intended to foster the development of MX-5 racing and encourage new entrants to the sport. Newcomers will be provided support and assistance, and competitors will be expected to adopt a gentlemanly approach to them under race conditions.

There will be 5 different classes in the competition. Points will be awarded at each round for place getters from each class. The overall winner for the season will be the competitor who amasses the most points, hence he or she could come from any class. MX-5 CUP entrants compete for class places at each round, to be overall round winners and for the title of overall MX-5 CUP Champion.

Note that the entrance fee for the MX-5 CUP championship will be separate from the event entry fee payable to the raceway or event promoter.

Rules and Regulations, Entry Forms and further information are available on the Downloads page.

Eligibility

The MX-5 CUP is open to MAZDA MX-5s (and imported MAZDA Miatas and Eunos Roadsters and the MX-5 based FIAT and Abarth 124 Spider Roadsters). A vehicle is defined as being an MX-5 or 124 Spider if it is visually recognisable as an MX-5 or 124 Spider, retains the original Mazda MX-5 VIN or 124 Spider VIN, and has a Mazda or FIAT piston engine.

Entry to the MX-5 CUP Championship is open only to current financial members of a recognised MX-5 Club in your state of residence.

Code Of Conduct

All competitors will be required to commit to a MX-5 CUP Code of Conduct. The intention is to provide for competitive but sporting racing, with special consideration for new entrants to the sport.

Non-MX-5 CUP Entrants

Non-championship entrants (including those who are not MX-5 Club members) are welcome to participate in a single MX-5 CUP race in a season. They will not be eligible to participate in the MX-5 CUP points tally or receive any other benefits for MX-5 CUP entrants. They are also required to agree in writing to the MX-5 CUP Sporting Code of Conduct before being allowed to form on the dummy grid. To participate in more than a single round, all competitors must satisfy the MX-5 CUP Series requirements by being a financial member of an MX-5 Club and lodging a series entry form available on the downloads page. If you have any questions please contact the MX-5 CUP secretary.

First Time Racers

If you are getting into racing for the first time you need to obtain a licence, and prepare your car. Information for those new to racing can be found on the club website HERE.

We encourage all budding MX-5 racers to come and join us. Reasonable track experience and car control is required. We recommend that prior to racing you gain experience at MX-5 Club of NSW Track Days and Motorsport Australia NSW Supersprint events.

The upper class threshold of a 1min 16s lap at Wakefield Park is a guideline. If you are concerned you may not meet this, please contact us to discuss your eligibility. Provided you have obtained sufficient experience, we will provide the support to enable you to take the grid for the first time.

The best way to get quicker is to go racing!

First Time Racers Preparation

The MX-5 CUP is a development series for MX-5 racers. Before submitting an entry in the MX-5 CUP, competitors will need to obtain:

  • Race licence
  • Vehicle logbook

They will also need to prepare their car and equipment to comply with the competition rules and regulations of the licencing body and those of the event promoter and raceway.

Further advice on getting started in racing is provided here.

A committee member has been assigned to assist with any questions and concerns that first time racers may have.
