Terrific Tassie Tour 2023
We bring you good news!
We have resurrected the Terrific Tassie Tour from the well of Covid-discarded plans from 2020 and bring you Terrific Tassie Tour 2023!
Overview
The tour will take 15 days – one day to get to the ferry at Geelong (overnight on the ferry), 13 days zoom zooming around Tassie, another overnight ferry trip, and a day to return from Geelong. Our crossing to and from Tassie will be overnight on the Spirit of Tasmania.
We’ll leave Geelong on the evening of 17 March and return to Geelong in the small ours of 1 April 2023.
We will run clockwise around Tassie, overnighting in Launceston, Scamander, Hobart, Strahan, and Sheffield, which allows us time for great driving and sightseeing.
Registration
The Tour will be strictly limited to a total of 12 cars, for safety, but mostly due to the very limited accommodation available.
Registration MUST be made by emailing Rod at canberra@mx5.com.au. We will accept the first ten registrations (after the two Run Leaders) according to the date/time of their email submission. Subsequent registrations will be waitlisted in case anyone drops out.
We will provide successful registrations with further details to allow them to make necessary bookings – this will include bookings on the Spirit of Tasmania and most accommodation. If you are successful we urge you to promptly book the ferry and provide accommodation providers with confirmation details.
Accommodation
Accommodation has been pencilled in at each of the planned destinations (Ulverstone, Launceston, Scamander, Hobart, Strahan, and Sheffield). With the exception of Launceston, accommodation providers require all tour participants to individually confirm their booking and provide credit card details. This must be done by 21 September 2022, so there’s no time to muck about.
Costings
We have made some rough costings for the tour:
- Ferry - $1500 (return for MX-5 and inside cabin, $900 if a recliner is selected)
- Accommodation - $2084 to $2344 depending on standard chosen
- Fuel – for an MX5, expect 350 litres for travel to, from, and within Tassie. At $2 a litre that’s $700. (Calculation does not include side trips at variance from planned routes.)
That’s about $4,500 per car PLUS meals, drinks, side trips, tourist activities and anything else you can think of.
Realistically, we are probably looking at about $6,500 per car (don’t hold us to that!).
What else?
Maps for most days’ touring will be provided and have been prepared to make the most of scenic route opportunities and places of interest. The routes we have chosen are not prescriptive and participants may travel alternative routes to other places of interest. Please note that due to lack of accommodation at Cradle Mountain, days trips from Sheffield (or other) will be necessary to visit Dove Lake.
