Both the weather preditions and the skys looked foreboding on the Saturday leading up to the 2nd round of the NSW Supersprint Championship at Wakefield Park near Goulburn, but although there were showers and rain on the Sunday it did hold off until the early afternoon and most drivers had at the opportunty of at least 4 dry runs.
Even with a few of the regular MX-5 club drivers missing from this round, there were still 26 drivers representing the club at this round, and 22 who have been at both rounds so far this year. What a great effort!
Once the rain set in around 1:30pm, most drivers decided to pack up and go home, although there were a few hardy types who took the opportunity for some wet weather practice, before the organisers called it a day at 3pm. Stewart Temesvary certainly took advantage of the conditions, racking up the most laps of the day over his 7 runs.
A results summary:
Class 1B: Bryan Shedden, Stewart Temesvary, Wade Jenkins, Keith Monaghan and Mitchell Bennet took 2nd through 6th, behind a fairly expensive Lotus
Class 1C: Mike Kelsey and Phillip Donnelly were 3rd and 4th
Class 2A: Scott McGarry and Tony WIlliams were 1st and 2nd, repeating their round 1 placings
Class 2B: Daniel Gardner and Phil Munnings were 2nd and 3rd, again behind a very quick Lotus Exige, with Jon Fox picking up a plucky 6th
Class 2C: With most of the Porsche's not making it all the way to Wakefield Park, Luke Kovacic and Mel Keller took the opportunity to grab 2nd and 3rd, behind the one Porsche that did get there
Class 3A: Mark Palmer was 2nd, not quite catching a fast little Corolla
Class 3B: Ralph Thompson was the sole MX-5 Club representative, but he make it worthwhile by winning the class
Class 4B: David Lawler, Ed Corey and Ian Combes were 2nd through 4th, behind a very quick little Honda
Class 4D: Matt & Greg Perry had some tyre issues with their Skyline, but still grabbed the points for 2nd and 3rd
Class 6A: Tony King and Glenn Thomas were 1st and 2nd, with Tony lowering his own lap record by just over half a second to 1:10.023. Well done Tony, .. 1:09s next time?
Class SVB: Mike Hicks and Greg Bunn were 2nd and 3rd
Class SVC: Andrew Fordham nabbed 4th
Overall, we scored 603 points, extending our lead in the championship, with 1,351 championship points to the ARDC on 692, and the HSV/HDT Owners Club of NSW coming 3rd with 425 points. We are on track to win back-to-back championships, but it is still early days and we need to keep pushing at the remaining events to be sure.
