2026 Interstate Challenge
27 August 2026
2026 posed a bit of a challenge for the Interstate Challenge. In the years when the MX-5 Club of Victoria/Tasmania have organised the event, it has typically been at Winton. A little bit of a no-brainer. Not too far and a good circuit. The last time it was run in Victoria, it was held at the Wodonga (Logic TAFE) circuit, which was well received. The MX-5 Club of Victoria/Tasmania don't run their own track days, so they are limited in which tracks days they can use. Usually they utilise an AROCA track day (Wodonga being an exception). Winton was not available in 2026.
In the end if came down to Broadford (which is a bit similar to Wodonga) and Philip Island. We have in the past shied away from Philip Island because of the distance, but given the limited choice, this year seemed the time to bite the bullet and select Philip Island. Apparently the interstate challenge has been at Philip Island in the past (before my time).
Many NSW MX-5 Club drivers have driven Philip Island in the 6 Hour regularity Relay (including myself on a number of occasions). Many of us have always wandered though what it would be like doing a competitive Supersprint there. It is one thing cruising around in a regularity, and quite another pushing the car to the limit - especially on this circuit.
If you haven't ever driven Philip Island, or have only ever done a regularity there, this 2026 Interstate Challenge should be on your bucket list! This is a great circuit - like nothing else you might have done - besides The Bend in South Australia. Nothing like coming out of MG corner and not having to worry about your lap time being too fast - precious!
It is long drive (normally 2 days, especially if you are towing a trailer), but it is so worth it. The surface is just beautiful, and the flowing nature of the track is very enjoyable. Pity that you need to focus on Turn 1 at 200+ kph or you could enjoy a fantastic view of Bass Straight!
The Victorian club will let us know when entries are open - the event is popular, so does fill up quick.
This is a (single points) round of the 2026 Club Sprint Championship - round 7. As is customary, you will be able to drop one round in 2026.
It is a popular event, so it would be wise to line up your accomodation well ahead of time too.
Start planning!
