Illawarra MX5 Bendooley Run Thursday August 17

What a great day for a run up the mountain! Sunny, with a hint of cool.

After assembling at Haywards Bay, it was tops down and away. Fortunately, (yes fortunately) Macquarie Pass was closed on Thursday, so Wes and Lena found us an alternate route up the ‘hill’.

And what a great road it was! Jamberoo Pass has recently been reopened after quite a lengthy closure due to landslips. Wow, I’d forgotten what a beautiful road it was. Winding and twisting up through the Pass, past The Abbey, Barren Grounds and Illawarra Fly. Perfect for sports cars and quieter than the Pass. The vegetation was green and lush and we even spotted a lyrebird close to the road.

A few purchases were made at the honey stall closer to Robertson. Thanks for the heads up Lena.

We stopped at the Robertson Cheese Factory for morning tea, which now has not only cheese, but a variety of sweet things and lovely coffee. A few traversed the ‘everything’ part of the shop to look at vintage and new clothes, games, nick knacks etc. Definitely a place to return to at another time.

Off we went again , this time through Kangaloon, on another fantastic road, further into the Highlands, and our destination at Bendooley Estate Winery and Berkelouw Book Barn.

We met up with some more club members and had a great lunch beside the huge open fire.

Of course, a highlight of the day was wandering through the book barn. Such a great array of books, collectors as well as modern. Again, another place to return to.

Thanks Wes and Lena for a great day out.
