Braidwood and Bungendore Run

Wednesday 10 May 2023

With the chilliest start to May in 100 years, we had all been watching our weather apps over the last few days, in preparation for our trip to Braidwood & Bungendore. Fortunately, the snow had melted, gale winds had dissipated, rain had stopped, and the sun was shining down through a brilliant blue sky. Nine members and six cars started our journey from The Heritage Bakery in Milton with tops down, hats and sunnies on.

Anne & Graeme led the convoy down the coast and surprisingly there was very little traffic, and it was easy to stay together as a group. All was going well until the Kioloa turn off, where Tony B had a dash alarm start beeping at him. Unsure of what the problem was, he had to leave the run and turn back for home.

The first section of the drive up the Clyde Mountain was fun… no caravans or trucks, just 5 MX5’s having a great time on the bends….until we hit the first of many temporary roadwork traffic lights, and there were plenty of these. The red light stops gave us plenty of time to enjoy the scenery… or do a crossword.

Morning tea at Vanilla@Altenburg café in Braidwood was one of the most delicious we have had on a run. All goodies are baked each morning on the premises, jams are homemade, ingredients, when possible, are locally sourced. This place is well worth a repeat visit…..just not too close to lunchtime as the serves are huge.

With satisfied appetites, we head off to Bungendore to join members of the Canberra Chapter for lunch at The George Hotel. Waiting for our orders to be served gave us plenty of time to catch up with our MX5 friends. Canberra had been on a scenic run along the Cotter Rd, through Tharwa and on to Bungendore. We shared stories about our morning runs, Tassie trips, etc, etc. Lots of interesting tips and ideas for future runs.

After a long lunch, some of us head straight home, while others went on to The Woodworks and a browse through the interesting shops in town.

Another great day out… thanks everyone.
