Canberra Australia Day Breakfast

The Canberra Chapter of the MX-5 Club of NSW celebrated Australia Day with a scenic gathering at Lake Burley Griffin, Canberra. Members met at 8:00 AM along Gary Owen Drive on Black Mountain Peninsula, where the site was clearly marked through the efforts of several members with signs to guide drivers away from the driving hazard in the car park.

16 beautiful cars and 24 members out for an early morning drive followed by a breakfast picnic requiring BBQ skills for all. Bacon and egg rolls in many shapes and sizes followed by the quintessential lamingtons and Anzac biscuits generously provided by some of our excellent bakers. A big hit all round.

Members brought their own chairs, tables, and even portable butane stoves for cooking. So much more reliable than public BBQ’s don’t you think?

We have had 3 weekend events in January all designed to enjoy the summer while avoiding the heat. Well, it seems global warming is a bit unreliable, but what’s not to like about a cool soft morning with views over the lake and nary a fly to be seen.

By 10am there was increasing scrutiny of our cars, not only because they are beautiful, but because of the increasing scarcity of parking on Black Mountain Peninsula as it hosted Dinofest, 2 blowup Aquatic parks and an increasing number of picnics. We exited carefully into the traffic having enjoyed an early start with friends and food for Australia Day 2025.

Many thanks to John Chapuis and Mike Lawless for their excellent coordination and planning.
