Design competition for 30th Anniversary Badge

13 December 2020 / Peter Barnwell

Here’s a challenge for your creative juices ... come up with a suitable badge design to celebrate our Club’s 30th Anniversary.

Yep, it’s been (over) 30 years since 104 MX-5 NA owners signed up to form the MX-5 Club of NSW at Vicary’s Winery Luddenham on 6 June 1990.

It all came about with the assistance of Mazda motorsport guru Allan Horsley, responsible for the NB SP and race winning RX-7s, as well as promoting the Mazda brand in NSW. Horsley was a sharp operator and recognised the importance of fostering a club of enthusiasts who had, not surprisingly, fallen in love with Mazda’s new sports car.

Little did he or the foundation members realise that they had started one of the strongest single make car clubs in Australia, with over 1000 members. There are seven chapters in our club with ages ranging up to 90+ years old. One wonders how many MX-5s our membership actually own???

So, after initially starting as a social driving club, the MX-5 Club of NSW moved to become incorporated as it grew and started becoming involved in motorsport and other activities.

Any 30th Anniversary badge design needs to take into account the history of our club and the cars around which it is based. Block colours are required as the badge will be die-struck and colour-filled, on a nickel-plated background. The club member who submits the winning design will receive a $50 voucher for Club regalia of their choice. Entries close 15 January 2021.

We will use the winning design to produce a commemorative 30th anniversary badge that will be given to every Club member who wishes to receive one.

Good luck.

Please send your submissions to membership@mx5.com.au.
