Honeysuckle Creek Picnic Run

It’s 18 January 2025 and because it’s a hot summer we are off to Honeysuckle Creek where it is traditionally several degrees cooler because it’s 1100 metres above sea level. Well it wasn’t that hot as it turned out but nonetheless 35 people driving 19 beautiful MX5s had coffee at Two before ten in Denman Prospect shops and took off about 11am for our picnic run to Honeysuckle creek.

The plan was to proceed to Uriarra Crossing, then to the Cotter, followed by Tharwa, and finally to the Honeysuckle Creek camping ground. But plans are meant to be varied.

Some of us got so caught up in driving on these perfect MX5 roads we missed the turn off to Uriarra village. But what’s a MX5 adventure without a u turn. Casually executed when we ran out of tar and hit the dirt. An extra 30 minutes of driving fun.

The route traversed some of the most spectacular scenery to the west of Canberra. Including regions affected by prior bushfires, a testament to the resilience of the landscape. Unfortunately those bushfires completely destroyed the tracking station which operated from 1967-1981 and was instrumental in the Apollo space program. Only a concrete pad remains along with various information about the station. The honeysuckle creek campground is now a favorite for those wishing to hike in the Namadgi National Park.

The roads were all in good condition and only a couple of potholes were spotted.

Upon arrival at Honeysuckle Creek, our advance party had fully executed the plan to ensure we had the tables and chairs under the shelter at the Honeysuckle Creek campground. The temperature had decreased, as expected. Picnic offerings were diverse and enjoyed by all. It was a great opportunity to catch-up on all those Xmas and New Year adventures.

A casual drive home to end a perfect day out in our MX5s.
