Lake and Beaches Twilight Run

03 March 2015 / Words & Photos by Peter Hilkmann

Seeing as it was still summer I decided that for our Sunday 22 February event, I would organise a Twilight Run, in order to "Beat the Heat". As it turned out, it rained for most of the day, but by late afternoon the sun decided to come out, just in time to dry the roads, and to give us all the opportunity to drive around "topless". But the storm clouds were never far away, and always threatening ...

With 15 MX-5s, and about 27 members, everyone was enthusiastic to experience our first twilight run. So we all set off with the roof down, and enjoyed the cooler temperatures. Our first stop was Swansea RSL Club for dinner. We travelled via Mount Sugarloaf, and some nice backroads toward Lake Macquarie, where we travelled along the eastern side of the lake to Swansea. Luckily we had a couple of large tables booked, as the RSL Club seems to be a very popular spot for the locals, and we soon found out why. As usual we all settled in and started chatting and mingling, whilst we were waiting for our meals ... oh, and maybe a drink here & there as well. The meals were great, and that's why it's popular with the locals I guess.

An hour and a half passed all too quickly, and soon it was time for the second half of the run. This would include driving back north to Newcastle City via the beaches, and watching the sunset along the way. Well the clouds were back, it started to drizzle, but we were not phased by the rain, we continued on with the roofs down, confident in the fact that "the faster we drive, the dryer we stay". So there was no sunset for us to enjoy, but we did get to Bar Beach dry, and just in time for some quick photos before it was totally dark.

From the comments I received during and after the run, everyone had a fantastic time and everyone enjoyed a run with a little bit of a difference.
