This week we have a report and results from the Club Track Day Round 4, and a brief overview of MX-5 Cup Round 2.
Please note, entries are open for our next track day, which is also the 2023 Interstate Challenge, at Pheasant Wood on Sunday 13th August. So far, entry numbers are very low, so I encourage you to enter the event and represent our club against those dastardly Victorians, and if you don’t plan to drive then please put your hand up to help run the event instead. Either way, I hope to see you there.
The featured picture this week is of Jai Ren in his standard class ND2 at the club track day last Sunday at SMSP South/Amaroo Circuit. Jai set a new benchmark for class 1K, beating the previous time by nearly 0.7s.

Club Track Day Round 4 at SMSP South/Amaroo – Sunday 16th July
The 4th round of the club track day championship saw 54 drivers compete in 5 run groups on the very technical SMSP South/Amaroo Circuit. There was plenty of track time on offer with up to 7 runs and 49 laps available.
Fastest on the day was Ralph Thompson in his Lotus Exige followed by David Lawler and Ian Spinks in MX-5s. The standout result came from Jie Ren, yet again, with a score of 101.08% beating the class 1K benchmark by almost 0.7s. That was a great result given the track was generally seen as “slow” on the day. No other class benchmark times were broken.
A special thanks to all the officials who made running the event possible, especially those who assisted as flag marshals. Unfortunately we did not have as many helpers as we would have liked and as a result the flag marshals did sterling service at their flag points all day, and in 2 cases working their flag point solo. Thanks very much.
The event results are on the club website here, as is the updated championship point score table here.
Photos from the event by Rob Wilkens are available in his flickr album. Thanks to Rob for his dedication in photographing club motorsport events.
Our next track day is at Pheasant Wood on Sunday 13th August (see above).
MX-5 Cup Round 2 at SMSP GP Circuit – Saturday 15th July
There were 19 MX-5 drivers who competed in MX-5 Cup Round 2 on the SMSP GP Circuit, combined with the Clubman category represented by 6 cars.
I don’t have an event report or results yet, but should be able to include them in the motorsport summary next week.
The next MX-5 Cup meeting is Round 3 at the SMSP North/Druitt Circuit on Saturday 26th August.
