Mountains to the Valley

Our day started at the Mt Sugarloaf lookout.

After morning tea our group had an informative presentation by Benita, a member of the heritage group.

Benita talked about the history of Mt Sugarloaf , A sacred site to the Awabakal people who once occupied the lands from the mountain to the coast in Newcastle. The mountain was noted by Captain in 1770 in his journals and much later worked by coal miners due to the large coal deposit underneath the mountain.

A notable date for Mt sugarloaf was July 18,1965 when snow fell on the mountain.

We then travelled to the Sugar Valley Library Museum at Cameron Park where we learned more about the history of the local area of its people, mining and many pubs.

Lunch was at the Holmesville Hotel which has lasted the time and still serves to this day.

Thanks to Phill and Mara for a great day, I learn't so many things about the area that I never knew!
