Round 5 of the CSCA Supersprint Series was held on Sunday 21 September 2025 at the Amaroo Circuit of Sydney Motorsport Park. This was our first opportunity to demonstrate to the CSCA clubs how the MX-5 Club of NSW organises a track day. Gaynor Lawler was our Event Secretary and she managed all the background details with the quiet efficiency we are familiar with. Not only would this event double as Round 4 of our MX-5 Club Sprint Championship, but we also had members from the MX-5 Club of Victoria & Tasmania make the long trip north to compete for the annual NSW/VIC Interstate Challenge. Three events in one!
Organising a track day is a huge exercise requiring personal commitment from a large number of club members. Thank you to everyone who made it possible: Gaynor Lawler (Event Secretary & Registration), Ian Combes (Clerk of Course), David Lawler (Deputy Clerk of Course), Jean Cook (Steward), Phil Donnelley & Greg Unger (Scrutineers), Ron Walker (Tower Spotter), Barry Luttrell (Registration), Jenny Luttrell (Catering), Ed Cory & Rob Giacometti (Grid Marshalls), Bryan Shedden (Point Score), John Karayannis (Vehicle Eligibility), and a team of flag marshalls David Wilson, Judith Hilling, Dave Hilling, Gai Tarrant, Mark Janus, Nick Satsia, Bruce Davies, Raj Condamoor, Grant Spinks, Michael Masutti and Amelia Masutti. Awesome work!

A solid field of 70 drivers competed on the day, with a few late withdrawals. The number of drivers from our Club was reduced to 26 as many were volunteering as officials. There were another 15 Victorians in MX-5s, plus 29 drivers from CSCA clubs in everything from Lotus Exige and Subaru BRZ to 1964 Ford Cortina and 1969 Triumph Spitfire. We even had a young lad in a Mazda 121 bubble car with daisy wheels taken from an NA MX-5 - he may have been the slowest out there but he had the same amount of fun as everyone else. In total, 38 (54%) of the competing cars were MX-5s.
We struck lucky with the weather. It was a glorious Spring day, starting cool and then warming to a top of 22°C. The track proved to be fastest in the early morning, with most producing their best time in the first run. Fastest time of the day was 57.925s by Adam Single in a Williams Sports Racer. The only other sub-minute time was 59.873s by Brendan Beavis from Victoria in his turbo MX-5 NB rocketship. Brendan was only about a second slower than Todd Herring's MX-5 track record from 2018.
In the MX-5 Club Sprint Championship, the highest score was by Bryan Shedden (99.98% in Standard), followed by John Karayannis (98.16% in Clubman), Ian Spinks (97.54% in Open) and Kyle Robinson (97.48% in Modified). The best score by a Victorian was 98.08% by Brendan Beavis (Open). The Interstate Challenge usually favours the home team due to differences in the vehicle classes between states. We tried our best to work out a system that gave the closest result. NSW won with a final score of 243 to 210. With the same method used by the Victorians last year, the result was 288 NSW to 172 VIC. Click the links for the full results, updated pointscore after Round 4, and Interstate Challenge results.
