MX-5 Cup round 1 on 9th April is open for entries!

04 March 2022

As many people know, the MX-5 Club organises an entry-level race series (i.e. door to door racing, not a supersprint) called the MX-5 Cup.

With rare exceptions (we have run a few of these events as part of Club track days), we don't usually run these ourselves - these race meetings are usually run by Motor Race Australia (MRA).  That is still true in 2022, but we have also been invited to run as part of the Wakefield Park Motor Race Series. The way the dates worked out in 2022, we were only able to pick up one of these events, which happens to be the first round of the MX-5 Cup for 2022 on the 9th April at Wakefield Park.

It will be interesting to see how this event goes compared to the MRA events.

The MX-5 Cup is the next step up from Supersprinting. While it most certainly is racing, we have a strict code of conduct that actively discourages the sort of 'over-exuberance' that you can get in other entry level race series. We actively encourage courteous and respectful racing. Deliberate paint-swapping is big no-no, but being a race series with some close racing, touches occasionally happen by accident.

The MX-5 Cup as a category and as a championship is organised and administered by the MX-5 Club of NSW - it is part of our motorsport program.

To compete, you do need to be a member of the MX-5 Club. You can enter one event without registering for the championship ($20 to register for the one event), and then if you like it, you need to register for the championship ($60).

The MRA meetings (and this Wakefield Park meeting) are run under AASA permits, and you do need a AASA (or Motorsport Australia) race licence. Your car does also need to meet AASA safety requirements for racing, but these are not much more onerous that for supersprtinting.

See MX-5 Cup Round 1 for details of this event.
