On a fine but cool spring morning, six cars carrying 8 people set off from the truck lay-by near Murrumbateman for our run to Cowra and the Japanese Gardens via Wyangala Dam. Our first stop was at Boorowa (by this time the morning had warmed up a little) where we were looked after for morning tea at the Marsden St General Café. The coffee and cakes were excellent as was the service.
Most drivers had the roof down for our next leg to Wyangala Dam. The countryside was looking spectacular after the recent rain and the bird life was prolific. We stopped to take in the sights at the dam. The dam was at capacity and made a good backdrop for some photos. Once people had taken photos and finished their usual chats the group continued to Cowra, through the village of Darbys Falls and other rural localities and with the lovely Weddin Mountains in the distance.
The Japanese Gardens Cafe provided an excellent light lunch for everyone in a very efficient manner, leaving plenty of time for a stroll around the gardens. It is the largest Japanese garden in Australia and has always kept in immaculate condition. We all appreciated the oasis of beauty and green. The cultural centre there was also very informative, with many displays of Japanese artefacts and a history of the gardens.
Once everyone had soaked in the serenity of the Gardens we left together and took the direct route home via Boorowa. A delightful day out, with great company and pleasant roads – what better way could there be to spend a Saturday?
