Running of the Sheep - the Irish Woolfest

Many months ago, I thought it would be a good idea to organise this run as the Running of the Sheep had been cancelled over the past two years due to Covid-19. However, I didn’t fully consider other factors, like a long weekend, the first day of daylight saving, a large monthly market near the departure point and Annemie having cataract surgery three days before the event.

First world problems, of course, but with them solved, including the ‘leave pass’ from Annemie to do a solo run; all was set. There were twelve cars and nineteen members at the “new” departure point ready to depart under a blue sky in near perfect Spring weather.

The drive to Boorowa was relatively easy with minimal traffic and very scenic with many paddocks covered in Canola plants. On arrival at Boorowa, we were met with road closures, detour signs and a decent crowd. Despite this, we managed to navigate our way to the parking location specified in the briefing.

Then it was free time to wander around Boorowa and mingle with the large crowd that had gathered for the event, including Club members from other Chapters. There were stalls and shops selling all sorts of interesting things, with a focus on local wool and produce, and they seemed to be doing a good trade (although I didn’t see anyone buy from the wind-chime staff – assuming the spoons, knives, forks dangling from an old teapot were, indeed, windchimes). I think the crowd was larger than in previous years as people are generally taking advantage of the freedom; no more Covid restrictions. The street parade, which involved floats with shearing demonstrations, and parades of old tractors and various vehicles from the local car club, was entertaining as many locals are involved in the event. The sheep to a bit of time to get running and none was gored (not quite as colourful as the Pamplona version).

Canola gold

After the street parade and running of the sheep we assembled in Boorowa Park for a picnic lunch and then a drive along Cunningar Road for a brief stop in Kalangan Road for a photo opportunity of the Canola fields. With no other traffic while we were parked on the road, a couple of members were overwhelmed by the moment.

We had another stop in Galong for photos before the drive back to Canberra.

I arrived home just before 4.00pm with 240kms on the trip meter. My thanks to all on the run for a very enjoyable day.
