South Coast Cruise and Whale Spotting
27 November 2013 / Norm and Roz Barker
The weather forecast had promised a wet weekend but as we gathered the sun shone. We left Blamey Square at 8:15 with 10 cars, via Bungendore to Braidwood for a short stop. The road was not busy and the sun followed us so tops were down for an enjoyable drive. Onward down the Clyde on the Kings Highway to Batemans Bay, stopping for morning tea at Malua Bay. Coffee was great and some indulged in some wonderful looking cakes. No whales spotted so far and the story seemed to be "you should have been here last week".
We followed the coast around through Broulee, along the Moruya River and back onto the Princes Highway. Heading south through Narooma to Bermagui, still being followed by blue sky, we stopped for lunch. Still no whales with the same story, "you should have been here last week". Barry Matson kept the leader informed of the progress at the back of the pack.
All well fed, we drove the scenic route along the cliffs and then the coast road to Tathra which goes past some isolated beaches, lovely farmland and forests. It is a good MX-5 road with many twisty bits. We all stopped at Tathra for some whale spotting but no luck again. The locals all said, "you should have been here last week", so afternoon tea at the wharf seemed like a good idea. Off we then went to Merimbula via the Sapphire Coast Road. We all stayed at the Fairway Motor Inn, with dinner at the Pambula-Merimbula Golf Club.
At 8:30 the group headed south to the lookout at Eden. A few people spotted a plume near the horizon but we didn’t really see any whales "should have been here last week". Giving up on the whales we drove around the bay to Boydtown and had morning tea at the newly renovated Seahorse Inn. Lovely morning tea and beautiful location for a return visit some time.
Continuing south to the Imlay road we followed the road to Bombala and on to Cooma for an excellent lunch at The Lott restaurant. After lunch it was an individual run home. As always the company was great and we all had a most enjoyable weekend together.
