Four intrepid MX5’s and their drivers gathered at Heathcote under a dark sky that was gradually being illuminated from the east. The prospect of an early start drive to the south, and then inland, created anticipation, and the convoy departed from the Shire, escorted by several groups of lycra-clad cyclists.

Leaving Waterfall in our wake, we exited onto the Old Princes Highway for the curved and undulating run to Bulli Tops. Helensburgh and Darkes Forest passed by in the dawn light, and the road allowed us to further explore the capabilities of our vehicles and turn onto Appin Road in a state of semi-exhilaration.

After a fairly benign run towards and through Appin township, we were able to generate some interest through the hairpin bends and narrow apertures of Broughton Pass, Douglas Park Causeway and Old Razorback Road, before stopping for a breather near the site of the Anthony Horden tree and 1983 truck blockade atop Razorback Mountain. The long shadows from the rising sun allowed some artistic licence to the photographers among us in this idyllic rural setting. A couple of strawberry blonde horses grazing in the adjacent paddock added to the ambience.

Breakfast beckoned, and we soon were heading through PIcton, Tahmoor, Bargo, and Yanderra before leaving the Wollondilly Shire via Remembrance Drive, past the iconic Tennessee Orchard and through Yerrinbool and Alpine, before turning onto Old South Road that skirts Aylmerton, Mittagong and Bowral before emerging just north of Moss Vale, the administrative centre of Wingecarribbee. Dodging the main street, we took the Illawarra Highway, Nowra Road and Yarrawa Road, allowing us to again wind our machines out through rural vistas until reaching our destination of Exeter General Store.

This café is worth the drive from Greater Sydney, Illawarra or Canberra, serving a tasty and varied menu in a rustic and friendly atmosphere. Conversation over our meal was BreakFast Club de rigeur – no topic off limits. We solved most of the world’s problems in around forty minutes. Alas, all good things come to an end, and we eventually went our separate ways, but not before having yet another stimulating driving experience, thanks to our superb cars.

For those members who have yet to sample a BreakFast Club event, give it some serious consideration. We drive when the roads are less trafficked, and all of us were home well before lunch, leaving us some more weekend time to enjoy.
