Three Dams - Cotter Picnic
An easy drive to Googong Dam to check out the single largest reservoir in the capital region, holding 119.4 gigalitres (or 119,400 million litres) of water.
Following a short stop we’ll cruise through the countryside, down Old Cooma Road to where it meets the Monaro Highway.
Morning tea is available at Tharwa General Store or bring your own (the store can be a bit slow serving customers). Then off to Corin Dam via some picturesque countryside.
The road to Corin is in generally good condition but it does narrow a bit and get twistier. Here we will stop in the carpark on the far side of the dam and have a look around. One of the best vantage points is back over the dam wall on the left. Corin Dam holds 70,900 million litres fed from a 197 square kilometre catchment area. It is approximately 2.5 times the volume of Lake Burley Griffin.
Once we’re done here, it’s off to the Cotter picnic area. The Cotter dam has a storage capacity of 76,200 million litres. Top water level: 550.8m above sea level.
Plenty of time now to relax, enjoy your picnic lunch, catch-up with some mates and perhaps join in some games. If anybody has bocce or other picnic games please bring them along. Following the fun, make your own way home.
