Introducing the 2025 Sprint Championship

10 January 2025 / Story by Chris Andry

Hello Motorsport friends, I wanted to share a few updates about club track days for this year.

Firstly, due to declining attendance over the last few years, we will no longer be organising all our own club track days because it is not financially viable for the Club. We’ve joined CSCA (Combined Sports Car Association) and will utilise all CSCA rounds for our Sprint Championship, allowing us to compete in more events over the season and at more tracks, including the GP and Druitt Circuits at SMSP which have never previously formed part of our sprint championship. We will be organising one of these rounds, at SMSP Amaroo Circuit on 21 September, which will double as the NSW/Vic Interstate Challenge. Competitors will be eligible for both the Club Sprint Championship (using our rules) and the CSCA Championship (using CSCA’s class structure).

Additionally, our hosting of the NSW Supersprint at One Raceway on 18 May will be included as a round of our Sprint Championship. As such, the Sprint Championship will consist of six rounds with one drop-round and utilise four circuits: One Raceway (x2), SMSP Amaroo (x2), SMSP GP, and SMSP Druitt. The variety on offer is truly very exciting for competitors, especially those who’ve missed Wakefield Park for the last few years!

Since we’ve joined CSCA our Motorsport committee have reviewed our technical rules and have made a few major changes. These changes were made in order to remain competitive in CSCA’s rule set, reducing costs for competitors and keeping our club track days competitive.

The most significant change is allowing all classes to run any tyre provided it is road legal and commercially available in Australia. Tyres are no longer restricted to the previous 200TW, and R-spec tyres are permitted in all classes. Open Class may continue to run with slicks if drivers prefer.

The Clubman and Super Clubman classes have been merged, with the number of permitted modifications in Clubman increased from 5 to 8. The benchmarks for Clubman are still 2.0% faster than Standard, while Modified is now 4.0% faster than Standard (reduced from 5.5% to account for tyre changes).

Given that we’re also racing at new tracks Bryan Shedden has crunched the numbers and determined benchmark times for SMSP GP and SMSP Druitt based on historical records. We will use the old Wakefield Park benchmarks for One Raceway this year. The benchmarks for all other tracks have been updated to account for the faster times that will come from the use of faster tyres. 2025 Benchmarks Times

A new 2025 class declaration form is required for all club track day entrants.

Those who wish to reserve a competition number must apply via the CSCA website and pay an annual fee of $10.
